The town re-incorporated in 1907 as Oak Bluffs, named because the town was the site of an oak grove along the bluffs overlooking Nantucket Sound. Oak Bluffs was the only one of the six towns on the island to be consciously planned, and the only one developed specifically with tourism in mind.
Originally incorporated in 1880 as Cottage City, in 1907 the town's name was changed because of the growth in the year round population and the changing face of the resort required an acknowledgment the Town was not just "Cottage City" any more. Even then, Oak Bluffs was a mecca for tourists and did not focus on industry as the other towns did. Oak Bluffs also became a center of the 19th century Methodist movement.
