The village is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Grade II listed Heathcote Hall, which dates back to the 17th century. Heathcote is a popular destination for walkers and hikers, with a number of scenic trails and footpaths running through the surrounding countryside.
Dec 13, 2022 · The first recorded Gold Discovery in Heathcote was made in January 1852 in the McIvor Creek near Heathcote. Gold is the most important metallic mineral in Heathcote, with numerous historical goldfields across the region, including: Axedale, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Costerfield, Fosterville, Graytown, Heathcote, Redcastle, Rushworth and Toolleen.
The first official land sale was in January 1854 and it was at this time the township was named Heathcote. Records are unclear as to why – possibly it was after a newly appointed British MP, or perhaps simply the abundance of wild heath growing in the area.
The possible site of the deserted settlement of Heathcote which was of Medieval date. It is thought to have been located south east of Heathcote Home Farm.
Appointed as a speech specialist, Heathcote became a lecturer at Durham University (later the University of Newcastle) in 1951, aged 24. She maintained and developed her innovative practice through working with local schools and asking if she could teach their classes.

Heathcote was originally known as ‘Hammerton’, the name of the 40 Hectare property owned by a well liked and respected pioneer- Isaac Cookson. When he moved away a decade later, the area was renamed Heathcote, after Sir William Heathcote of the Canterbury Association.

The Pink Cliffs Geological Reserve is a remarkable area to visit on the edge of Heathcote. Once a hydraulic sluicing site, mining activity in the late 19th century washed away the top layer of earth and revealed the dramatic, colourful cliffs on display today.
