Good rule of thumb is to get to the stadium itself for 2pm if it's a 3pm kick-off. Most stadiums open the stiles and gates at 1:30pm, or ninety minutes before whenever kick-off is. I would recommend for you personally (given that it's your first match) getting there for just before 1:30 so you can get in and get settled as soon as the gates open.

Etihad Stadium is also accessible on foot from the city centre. There is a well-lit, sign-posted walking route available from Manchester Piccadilly station that takes roughly 30 minutes.
