Built by the fourth earl of Clanricarde, Portumna Castle was the de Burgo family power base for centuries. The castle is a unique example of the transitional Irish architecture of the early 1600s.
The castle is open to visitors from March to October daily 10am – 6am. Tours last about 1 hour with last admission at 17.15. Ticket prices. Adult: €5.00. Group/Senior: €4.00. Child/Student: €3.00. Portumna Castle and Gardens are open from 15 March – 3 November each year. Admission tickets include a guided tour of the castle and grounds which lasts around one hour. There is a car park, picnic area, playground and toilets available at the castle, as well as a lovely tea room, with outdoor seating.

Portumna Castle and Demesne occupy a magnificent location on the shores of Lough Derg on the River Shannon. Although gutted by fire in 1826, the Castle is still an imposing example of Irish architecture of the early 17th Century.
Cloudy days. Portumna Castle, built close to 400 years ago by the de Burgo (Burke) family, stands close to Lough Derg, the River Shannon, and Portumna Forest Park in Portumna, County Galway.
