The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a public research university in Norman, Oklahoma, United States. Founded in 1890, it had existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory for 17 years before the two territories became the state of Oklahoma.
1891 First Board of Regents for the University of Oklahoma appointed by Governor Steele. 1892 David Ross Boyd, Superintendent of the Arkansas City, Kansas school system, became first president of the University of Oklahoma.
The first education classes at the University of Oklahoma began in 1901, with one course in educational principles and one course in education history. As new residents poured into Oklahoma both before and after statehood in 1907, the demand for capable teachers led to the university establishing a full School of Teaching in 1909.

The university’s gridiron-football team, nicknamed the Sooners, has won several collegiate national championships, and under coach Bud Wilkinson they won a record 47 straight games.
