The Oratory Prep School traces its origins to John Henry Newman, a former Anglican Oxford intellectual who became a Catholic and was later made a Cardinal. He was canonised by Pope Francis during an open-air Mass in Rome on 13th October 2019. The school opened on 2nd May 1859 with nine boys on roll, all of prep school age.

2019 was an exciting year for The Oratory School as it became 160 years since the school was founded by Saint John Henry Newman in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The school began on 2 May 1859 with 9 boys. Since that time, the school has moved twice, firstly to Caversham Park in 1922, and then to Woodcote in 1942 and has grown in size since its Victorian days of no more than 70 boys.
The Oratory Prep School is a Catholic day and boarding school for some 330 boys and girls aged from two to thirteen, founded in 1925. The school is co-educational and is separate from the nearby Oratory School , although they share a similar history.
