Apr 22, 2023 · The Pennsylvania Dutch took their new status as American settlers seriously, thus promoting the title of Pennsylvania Dutch, as it distinguished them from other European Germans who began filtering into the United States later in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 1608, English Captain John Smith visited the Susquehannock Indians in Pennsylvania. In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed into Delaware Bay, thus giving the Dutch their claim to the area. In 1610 Virginian Captain Samuel Argall visited Delaware Bay (he named it for Lord de la Warr, governor of Virginia).
In the 17th century, the Dutch, Swedish, and British all competed for southeastern Pennsylvania, while the French expanded into parts of western Pennsylvania. In 1638, the Kingdom of Sweden , then one of the great powers in Europe, established the colony of New Sweden in the area of the present-day Mid-Atlantic states .
The European inhabitants included the Dutch, who had established a trading post in the area in 1624, and the Swedes and Finns who created the first permanent settlement of New Sweden in 1638. Most of these settlers lived in the area from what was later Philadelphia to New Castle, Delaware.
