Wellington College was granted a royal charter in 1853 as The Royal and Religious Foundation of the Wellington College, and was opened in 1859. Its first Master, which is the title of the headmaster, was Edward White Benson, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. The college's Visitor was Queen Elizabeth II.

Wellington College opened in 1859 as a national memorial to Arthur, Duke of Wellington, and was seen by Albert, the Prince Consort, as an opportunity to promote a modern, forward-looking education system in Britain. These factors alone give Wellington a unique identity and place in history.
We began with our oldest cohort of Old Wellingtonians, those who were at College in the 1940s and 1950s. We drafted a questionnaire, designed to spark memories of many aspects of College life, and sent it to over 700 individuals. We are incredibly grateful to the 130 who took the time and trouble to respond.
In 1959 Wellington College celebrated its centenary – one hundred years since the first students arrived. Events to mark this milestone took place throughout the year, but particularly in the summer term of 1959.
This was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s vision when they founded the school in 1853 and this desire to pioneer, to do things differently, and to make Wellington the most inspiring and interesting place to live and learn burns as brightly today as it did when our first pupils arrived.
