Waltrip was born on February 4, 1947, in Owensboro, Kentucky. Starting his driving career in Go-karts at age 12, Waltrip entered his first stock car race just four years later. Waltrip and his father built a 1936 Chevrolet coupe and headed to a local dirt track near their Owensboro home.
According to his autobiography Blink of An Eye, Waltrip's career started at age 12 when he phoned his older brother Darrell Waltrip, who was racing in the 1978 Daytona 500. Michael asked Darrell to help him build a career in NASCAR, but Darrell advised him to stay focused on school.
Born in Owensboro, KY, on Feb. 5, 1947, Waltrip began racing as a teenager. He quickly conquered the little tracks around the area, and in the late 1960s he and his new bride, Stevie, migrated to the Nashville suburb of Franklin, TN, so he could pursue his career at Fairgrounds Speedway.
