Oct 9, 2017 · Waldsassen suffered greatly from the continual wars that raged across Germany from the 14th-16th centuries. During the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, the abbey was closed by Protestant forces, and did not reopen until 1648.

In 1669, Waldsassen was restored to the Cistercians, and in 1690 Albrecht, first of the second series of abbots (who were six in number), was elected, regaining control of the abbey, but not its imperial immediacy.
It didn’t start out as an Imperial Abbey, just a regular old one built by the Cistercians in 1128. Less than two decades later it was granted its Imperial status by Conrad III. Throughout the centuries, Waldstetten Abbey underwent renovations, and its present form comes from the Baroque period.
However, Waldsassen again was secularised during the 1803 German Mediatisation. Part of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1806, the local economy, mainly porcelain and glassblowing industries, was boosted by the opening of the Wiesau–Cheb railway line in 1865.
From 1975 to 1976, E. Pfaff the organ was extensively rebuilt in the rococo housing. From 1982 to 1983, Georg Jann (Laberweinting) built new organs in the choir. From 1988 to 1989, Jann rebuilt all three organs after plans by Günther Kaunzinger, using partly the old pipes.
