From 1875 until the beginning of Japanese rule in 1895, Taipei was part of Tamsui County of Taipeh Prefecture and the prefectural capital. [33] In 1885, as work commenced to govern the island as a province, Taipeh was thus temporarily designated as a provincial capital. The city officially became the capital in 1894.
As approved on December 30, 1966 by Executive Yuan, Taipei became a centrally administered municipality on July 1, 1967. In the following year, Taipei City expanded again by annexing Shilin, Beitou, Neihu, Nangang, Jingmei and Muzha.

After the end of the Japanese colonial period, Taihoku Prefecture was renamed Taipei County. The capital of Taihoku Prefecture became Taipei City, and was thereafter considered a separate administrative division. Taipei County’s county seat was relocated to present-day Banqiao City.
In 1945, Taipei was designated as a provincial municipality. Four years later, the Chinese Nationalist Government relocated to Taiwan, and Taipei became a provisional capital. From then on, its status grew more and more important. In July, 1967, Taipei became a directly-controlled municipality.
The city government was originally established as Taipei County Government on 25 December 1945, shortly after the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in October 1945 and the Banqiao Township chosen as its county seat in 1947.
