The Washington Savacentre opened on 15 November 1977. It had a sales area of 6,500 square metres (70,000 square feet), half of which was devoted to textiles, electrical goods and hardware. There were parking spaces for 1300 cars (not 13,000, as Sainsbury’s staff magazine ‘JS Journal’ mistakenly reported the previous year!).
The first SavaCentre opened at The Galleries, Washington, Tyne and Wear, on 15 November 1977, [1] with 70,000 sq ft (6,500 m 2) of sales area, and the slogan "The store with more for less.". This store was extended by a further 10,000 sq ft (930 m 2) to 80,000 sq ft (7,400 m 2) in 1986.

Oct 23, 2018 · It opened on 17th October 1978 so has just celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2018. These photos showing the construction of Hempstead Valley were kindly sent by Chris Shade. You can see the large sign showing the original name of Savacentre. A current photo of Savacentre is shown on the Hempstead Valley website.

Oct 2, 2018 · Many people still affectionately refer to Hempstead Valley as the SavaCentre, but the large hypermarket was re-branded to Sainsbury’s in 2004. The centre has undergone a series of redevelopments including the M&S mall which was completed in 1992.
