They removed it back then because it was ridiculous to have hundreds and hundreds of friends and a handful of best friends: anyone who were mutual best friends during the removal were automatically added as friends, while all your other "friends" simply became followers.

   How best friends worked is similar to the current friends and followers system in a way. Users could accept infinite friend requests, however users could also pick a limited amount of users (I think the cap was 100 but I could be mistaken) to be best friends.
