Prior Lake is in Minnesota's 2nd congressional district, represented by Angie Craig. Parts of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) tribal lands are within the boundary of the City of Prior Lake as annexed in 1972.
The 1920s to 1950s saw Prior Lake as a typical small American town experiencing the major events surrounding two world wars. From World War II to 1960, Prior Lake experienced moderate growth with the lake being a major recreational pastime.
European settlers began to arrive in the area in the early 19th century, drawn by the fertile land and plentiful water sources, including Lake Prior. The settlers established farms and towns around the lake, further shaping the landscape and economy of the region.
Prior Lake (renamed after Charles Prior, of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad) is made up of two sections, Upper Prior Lake and Lower Prior Lake. The area of each is 354 and 810 acres (3.3 km 2 ) , respectively.
Over time, as more settlers arrived, the town of Prior Lake began to flourish. It became a hub for agriculture and trade, thanks to its proximity to the Minnesota River and advantageous location along the historic Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux trail.
