Odeon Cinemas was created in 1928 by Oscar Deutsch. Odeon publicists liked to claim that the name of the cinemas was derived from his motto, "Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation", [5] but it had been used for cinemas in France and Italy in the 1920s, and the word is actually Ancient Greek ᾨδεῖον, Ōideion, meaning "a place for singing". The first Deutsch Odeon, built in a Moorish style, opened at Perry Bar, Birmingham in 1930. It was one of the co-funders of the cinema project – grocery store owner Mel Mindelsohn – who suggested the name ODEON after spotting it in Tunis, North Africa.
The Odeon Theatre, Perry Barr opened on 4th August 1930 with Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers in “Illusion” and Stewart Rome in “Dark Red Roses”. It was designed by architects Stanley A. Griffiths and Horace G. Bradley in a Moorish style both externally and internally.
In October 2006 a multiplex was opened at the Dickens World attraction in Chatham’s Maritime Quarter. Although owned by the theme park, the cinema is operated by, and branded as, Odeon.
