History. New York Mills is a unique Village. Its inception was because of the Waloctt Mills. The Village was forming gradually and carefully like a green little apple in the center of New York Stare, before the state thruway and Erie Canal came to be. The neighboring villages incorporated earlier.
With the eventual closing of the mills in the 1950s, residents found employment in the surrounding area as the village evolved into a stable and prosperous suburban community. After the Revolutionary War, which started in the year of 1775 and ended in 1783, an act was passed and the town of Whitestown was formed.
The strip of land lying on the west bank of the Sadaquada Creek, a name given by the Indians and later changed to Sauquoit Creek, from its mouth to a distance of three miles was immediately settled. Within the limits are now included the village of New York Mills.
