Margret was in the advanced stages of consumption (tuberculosis) and died on May 28; she was buried by the side of the trail. In addition to leaving financial worries behind, Reed hoped that California's climate would help Margret, who had long suffered from ill health. [22]

His wife Margaret (Peggy), 40, was rescued by John Stark of the Third Relief after being abandoned by the Second Relief at Starved Camp. She died in 1874.
