McMahon also served in the Leatherneck Air Group during World War II. From Philadelphia, McMahon went to NYC to work on an ABC-TV game show called, "Who Do You Trust" which was hosted by an up and coming comic named Johnny Carson. They have been friends ever since.
WCAU radio entered the history books of broadcasting when, during June 1929, the station took part in the first broadcast from two radio-equipped airplanes, during which an airborne announcer over New York City introduced a speaker in the Philadelphia studio of WCAU.
Two months after WIP became the first commercial radio station in Philadelphia, WCAU went on the air in May, 1922. WCAU’s founder was an electrician named Wilson Durham, who started the 250-watt station in the back of his shop at 1936 Market Street.
