    Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, she began her career as a musical theatre actress before appearing in a number of films including a minor role in The Snake Pit. She then became well-known as a stage musical actress.

    Clayton then appeared in such television shows as Where's Raymond and Wagon Train, but most importantly in playing Ellen Miller in Lassie.

    Clayton's first major musical role came in originating the role of Julie Jordan in Carousel, followed soon after by a memorable appearance as Magnolia Hawks and Kim Ravenal in Show Boat.

    As well as singing "'Goin Home" in The Snake Pit and "Sleep, My Baby Sleep" in The Wolf Hunters, Clayton would also go on to appear in such shows as Guys and Dolls and Follies.
