Inver Grove Heights is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 35,801 at the 2020 census. [2] The city was formed on March 9, 1965, with the merger of the village of Inver Grove and Inver Grove Township. [5] It is one of 186 cities and townships in the seven-county Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. [6]
Students worked individually and in groups to produce a collection of history that begins to capture the identity of a site on the Mississippi River southeast of St. Paul that would ultimately be known as Inver Grove Heights in the post-World War II period.
The Early Years. The area now known as Inver Grove Heights was first settled by European immigrants in the mid-19th century. The city's name is derived from the combination of the Scottish word "Inver" meaning mouth of a river, and "Grove Heights" referring to the local groves of trees.
In 1852, pioneers staked claims in an area known as Inver Grove. Attracted by the area’s rolling green hills of the countryside and the close proximity to the Mississippi River, these settlers from Ireland and Germany quickly established a community.
On March 9, 1965 Inver Grove Township and Inver Grove Village citizens voted 1,380 as “City” the Village replaced of Inver “Village” to comply with a 1974 Grove Heights. to 331 toIn merge.
