Austrian-born British composer and conductor Joseph Horovitz was born in Vienna on 26 May 1926 into a Jewish family which moved to England in 1938 to escape the Nazis. He studied at New College Oxford then composition with Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music in London, and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.
