The Cure. It all started in 1976 as Easy Cure, formed by Robert Smith (vocals, guitar) along with schoolmates Michael Dempsey (bass), Lol Tolhurst (drums) and local guitar hero Porl Thompson. They began writing and demoing their own songs almost immediately, playing throughout 1977 in Southern England to an ever growing army of fans.
Smith was also not the sole songwriter or lyricist in the group during their early years; the band name Easy Cure came from a song penned by Lol Tolhurst, [36] while Grinding Halt began as a Tolhurst lyric that Smith shortened to the first half of each line.

In April they answered a Melody Maker advert from the German record label Hansa – home to Boney M – and were invited to audition at Morgan Studios in Willesden, north-west London.
