History. The College was founded in 1532 (Old Style) in the will of Richard Collyer, who was born in Horsham, and became a wealthy member of The Mercers' Company of the City of London. The Mercers' Company are still the school's trustees, and maintain a close relationship with the school.
Like many sixth form colleges in the country, Collyer’s converted from being a single-sex 11-18 school to a mixed voluntary-aided 16-18 college in 1976, marking an exciting new future for the long-standing town institution.
Richard Collyer became Third Warden of The Mercers’ Company in 1528, five years before his death in 1533. The original Tudor school was built next to St Mary’s Church at the heart of the town, with 60 pupils all in one large classroom taught entirely in Latin.
