The Chicago Academy opened in 2001. TCA was Chicago Public School’s first contract school as well as its first school-based teacher preparation program for aspiring teachers. In its first year, it operated classes from prekindergarten through fourth grade.

On sound footing for the first five years of its existence, it was laid low by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, after which it became inactive for a short time, then prospered for a few years, and finally expired. In 1879, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, which was later renamed the Art Institute of Chicago, was created from the ashes of the CAD.
Chicago Academy High School opened in 2004 and was Chicago Public School’s second contract school. In its first year, it operated classes for ninth grade, adding a grade each year until its first class graduated in 2008. A synthetic turf field was added in 2007, the first of its kind at a CPS school.
