Television broadcasts in the United Kingdom began in 1932, however, regular broadcasts would only begin four years later. Television began as a public service which was free of advertising, which followed the first demonstration of a transmitted moving image in 1926.
Televisions were an uncommon sight before the Second World War, with only around 20,000 sets in Britain. The Marconiphone model 709 was probably released in 1938. But the following year, when war was declared, television broadcasts were discontinued and sets could only be used for their radios.
It took four years for the BBC to abandon the mechanical Baird TV system, why it happened and why it was crucial.
