David Packard (/ ˈ p æ k ər d / PAK-ərd; September 7, 1912 – March 26, 1996) was an American electrical engineer and co-founder, with Bill Hewlett, of Hewlett-Packard (1939), serving as president (1947–64), CEO (1964–68), and chairman of the board (1964–68, 1972–93) of HP.
At the core of Hewlett-Packard’s culture were Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, two men who dedicated their professional lives to establishing and leading a new kind of company, one that reflected their values. As Hewlett-Packard thrived, Bill and Dave continued to share those values with the world both inside and outside of the boardroom.
Hewlett and Packard first met as undergraduate students at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. After graduation in 1934, Hewlett went to MIT to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering, while Packard worked at General Electric.
Bill and Dave became friends when they were both engineering students at Stanford. After graduation, Dave took a job with General Electric and moved to Schenectady, New York, where he married his college sweetheart Lucile Salter in 1938.
Bill and Dave were friends at Stanford and reunited in 1939 to form Hewlett-Packard. From an HP perspective, the most significant influence on the two was Stanford engineering (iconic) professor Frederick Terman.
