Scooter Braun and Stone Street had discussed a song that reflected the era. Scooter hopes to bring people together with a song about what's going on in the world. The positive message meant to encourage people, let alone donate to charity, really makes the song bigger and more meaningful than the song itself in such a crazy time. Wexler sent the demo to Scooter Braun. “Within a week, Ariana sent us revisions.” It was Ariana’s idea to have a male singer record the record, and she sent it to Justin.
On April 30, 2020, Bieber and Grande teased an announcement the next day. On May 1, 2020, they announced the song and it was made available to pre-save. The net proceeds from the song went to the First Responders Children's Foundation.
