Sep 26, 2014 · The film is not only set in 1962, it looks as if it were made in 1962. Co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac add to the verisimilitude of the period, as do the Greek locations. But it’s Mortensen and his smokes that seal the deal.
1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinth Canal. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side.
A first screen adaptation of the novel was filmed in Germany in 1986, as Die zwei Gesichter des Januar. The second adaptation of the novel was released in 2014. It was written and directed by Hossein Amini , and starred Viggo Mortensen , Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac .
