The City of Leduc traces its roots back to 1889, when Robert Telford settled a piece of land near a scenic lake. Named after Father Hippolyte Leduc, the community became a village in 1899, a town in 1906 and eventually incorporated as a city in 1983.

History. Leduc was established in 1891 by Robert Telford, a settler who had bought land near a lake which would later bear his name. It was on that piece of land where the new settlement would take root. Telford established a stopping place for the stagecoach line that in 1889 connected Calgary to Edmonton. It became known as Telford's Place.
Mar 17, 2021 · The history of the Indigenous is found in the eight locations in the area that are recognized by the Archeological Survey of Alberta. Archeological digs within the area have dated the Indigenous living around what would be Leduc for upwards of 4,000 to 10,000 years. Currently, Leduc sits on Treaty 6 land.
Telford served as Leduc's as its first postmaster, first general merchant and first justice of the peace, and the fledgling community was initially known as Telford. He also helped other settlers in the area find land and get established. The name Leduc was chosen by a settler who was struggling to name the telegraph office he was establishing.
Though today Leduc is known for its oil boom or the International airport, it began as a telegraph station on the Calgary-Edmonton Railway line in 1891. Thus begins the story of Leduc as a nexus for the surrounding communities bringing in cream, crude oil, and wheat from around the countryside and shipping out butter, refined oil, and flour in return. 1
