Surface Tension is the first mission within Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and sees Peter and Miles fending off a rampaging Sandman as he tears through the streets of New York.
The game begins with a flashback to two years in the past, with Harry Osborn preparing to enter the vat with the symbiote. He asks Norman (his father) to promise him that if this doesn’t work, he wants to be taken back out so he has time to say goodbye. Norman swears he won’t let him go, as black tendrils emerge from his arm and envelop Harry, who awakens with a fright inside the tank as the shutters close around him.
Back in the present, Miles sits in a classroom frustrated over his inability to write a personal statement for his college application.
Fellow students (including Ganke and Hailey) enter and Peter bursts through the door, introducing himself as their new teacher. Miles notices sand drifting past the window, and excuses himself to the “bathroom” before quickly rushing back and demanding he needs Peter’s help.
Peter reluctantly joins him on the roof of the school to see Sandman causing chaos across the bay. Both suit up and dive off the building, launching into action.
Controlling Peter, begin swinging through the streets with R2 in the direction of the yellow quest marker. You’ll receive a call from MJ urging you to hurry to stop Sandman, as you learn that J. Jonah Jameson is her new boss at the Daily Bugle.
As you reach the bridge, swing underneath or from the sides to maintain momentum as you cross the water, and use the boats as launch points as a last resort if you drop down (zipping to them with L2 + R2 when the white circle crosshair is over them).
Reaching the far side of the bridge, you’ll enter the sandstorm and soon enough a large truck will fly through the air towards you.
Dodge when prompted with O and then continue swinging as Sandman properly comes into view up ahead. Sandman will continue to throw things at you intermittently, which you can dodge with O and occasionally throw back with L1 + R1.
Sandman can also lengthen his left arm into a thin blade-like form and swipe at you, which again can be easily dodged as the spidey-sense indicator around Peter’s head goes from white to red. These swipes are always followed up with debris being launched into the air, all of which can immediately be used as projectiles to throw back at Sandman by holding L1 + R1.
After avoiding swipes/thrown objects and throwing some objects back, you’ll eventually be prompted to web zip to Sandman’s face with △, and Sandman grabs you after you land on his nose. He’ll throw you into a nearby office building and begin chasing you with a wave of sand, which you’ll need to hold the left analog stick forward and hold R2 to continually parkour forward to escape.
Later, with Marko in human form and in custody, he laments that he hasn’t been ok for a long time, and neither will Peter or Miles be “when they come for you”. As Marko is lifted away, Peter and Miles ponder what he could have meant.
In a cutaway scene six months prior, Kraven the Hunter savagely kills someone who disappointed him in his quest for the ultimate predator/prey challenge, and one of his guards suggests New York as the next hunting ground. Kraven coyly agrees and tells them to prepare to depart.
Back in current day New York, both Miles and Peter are helping with the cleanup/rescue operations left in Sandman’s wake when they acknowledge that the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app is offline. As Ganke prepares to resolve the problem, Peter continues his efforts to help people.
As the mission concludes, you’ll earn 1900XP.
