Jul 31, 2024 · Food-wise, there is still so much more to explore in Turkey. Looking at a map, I almost don’t know where to begin. If it’s your first time visiting Turkey, then this list of 35 traditional Turkish dishes gives you a good place to start.
- Turkish Meze. A Turkish meze plate is a perfect way to start a meal. It’s a great way to try a little bit of everything. The best part is that there’s something for everyone.
- Simit. If you’re walking around Istanbul or any city in Türkiye, you’ll see a simit. These are Turkish bagels that have sunflower seeds on top. They’re circular and go wonderfully with a glass of Turkish tea or cay.
- Leblebi. Street food is super-popular in Turkey; if you wander around, you’ll see vendors selling leblebi. These roasted chickpeas are seasoned with spices and salt.
- Midye Dolmas. Midye are mussels, but midye dolmas are stuffed muscles, usually stuffed with rice or meat. These are another popular street food snack you’ll see everywhere, and they’re traditionally served with a bit of lemon squeezed over the top.
- Borek. Borek is one of my favourite foods in Turkey. Simple, cheap, and it always hits the spot. Borek is a savoury pastry or pie made with thin layers of filo (or phyllo) dough, filled with various ingredients such as cheese, spinach, spiced ground meat, or potatoes.
- Mercimek Corbasi. Mercimek çorbası, or lentil soup, is a beloved classic in Turkish cuisine. This hearty and nourishing soup is made primarily from red lentils, cooked until tender and blended with sautéed onions, garlic, and spices such as cumin and paprika to create a smooth and velvety texture.
- Pide. Turkish pide is a traditional Turkish flatbread shaped like a boat and topped with various delicious ingredients. Think of it as a cross between pizza and bread.
- Leblebi. Leblebi is a popular chickpea snack in Turkey—essentially, chickpeas are roasted or fried until they become golden brown. Leblebi can be found in various forms, ranging from plain roasted chickpeas to seasoned and spiced versions.
Oct 20, 2024 · Cheese – Beyaz peynir and kaşar cheese are frequently served. Kaymak – A rich dairy product similar to clotted cream. Breads. Bread is an essential part of Turkish cuisine. Here are some to look out for: Pide – Oval-shaped flatbread baked in a stone oven. Can be topped with cheese, meat, veggies.
- Döner Kebab. (Most Famous Food to Try in Turkey Overall) When you think of Turkish food, you probably think of the döner kebab first. Now, I should point out that this is nothing like the dry or greasy kebab you get on a night out after the club back home; this is a juicy, delicious, and downright mouth-watering treat.
- Turkish Breakfast (Including Menemen) I’m going to cheat a little here and add a whole meal rather than a specific food: if I listed everything in a Turkish breakfast, I’d be here all day.
- Lahmacun. Another famous dish of Turkey is lahmacun, often referred to as Turkish pizza, although I don’t think it’s anything like pizza at all. Lahmacun is a thin and crispy flatbread that’s topped with minced lamb, tomatoes, and spices and then cooked in a wood-fired oven.
- Pide. One of the most popular foods in Turkey is without a doubt pide. Just like lahmacun, you’ll find this absolutely everywhere, and it comes in different types.
Apr 4, 2020 · It’s one of the most diverse cuisines in the world, and there is an abundance of traditional dishes to eat in Turkey. Moreover, each region has its own specialties and regional recipes for classics.
