Public open days – We are open most first Sundays of each month and for two weekends during Brighton Fringe in May. Please see our event pages for our 2024 openings. We also open as part of the Heritage Open Days in September. We are open by appointment throughout the year for group tours of the shelter.
Tours of the shelter will be running between 10am – 1pm. Each tour last up to 40 minutes and we recommend that you pre-book your tickets to avoid disappointment. While at Take Shelter you can also find out more about wartime Brighton in our dedicated museum and chat to our veterans who were all children during the war.
Take Shelter is within the grounds of Downs Junior School on Ditchling Road, Brighton. Access to the event is via the school gate on Ditchling Road. By bus: Services 26, 46 & 50 stop nearby. By train: We are a 10 minute walk from London Road station.
Take Shelter is open for visits during the Brighton Fringe Festival in May and on Heritage Open Days in September. Access to the exhibit at Take Shelter is very limited: The original staircase entrances have been removed over time and access is only possible via a man-hole.
