Like any other chapter in your thesis or dissertation, your literature review needs to have a clear, logical structure. At a minimum, it should have three essential components – an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Let’s take a closer look at each of these.
Preparing a literature review involves: Searching for reliable, accurate and up-to-date material on a topic or subject. Reading and summarising the key points from this literature. Synthesising these key ideas, theories and concepts into a summary of what is known. Discussing and evaluating these ideas, theories and concepts.
A literature review will usually do some or all of the following: Introduce the reader to a specific area of interest. Organise relevant sources thematically, starting with the more general, broader themes and narrowing towards the most specific themes.
