    • Create the sky gradient. The sky transitions from a pale yellow at the top, to a warm red at the horizon on the left hand side of the composition.
    • Paint the light around the sun. The sun is the centre point of the composition. First I painted the surrounding clouds and brightest parts of the sky.
    • Paint the sun. Dot in the centre of the sky with titanium white where you want the sun to go. I’m measuring halfway along the horizon to find the centre point.
    • Outline the clouds around the sun. There’s variation in tones above where the light from the sun is passing through the clouds. The edges of the clouds are illuminated with a light yellow tone.

In a way, this is something that I could never fully achieve. But we can come pretty close if we lay down a solid base of darks and mid-tones. A few tips for the highlights: 1. Brighte...

One of the advantages of oil painting (and acrylic painting to an extent) is being able to achieve rich and deep darks and mid-tones. This allows you to create such stunning sunset paintings. But with watercolors, your darks and mid-tones may not appear nearly as strong. That is not to say you are not able to paint stunning sunsets with watercolors...

This is one of Vincent van Gogh’s more simple paintings. There is a general haze as the light is diffused by the clouds. Observe the sharp contrast between the high-value sun and the rest of the painting which is in the mid to low-value range. Here is a more complex and vibrant painting by Vincent van Gogh. I love the contrast between the dull viol...

  4. Aug 2, 2022 · To re-create this peachy-pink, mix Scarlet Lake with Titanium White No.1. When mixing tints, add the dominant colour to the white, rather than adding white to the dominant colour – you'll save a lot of white paint. Then 'peach-up' the pink by adding small amounts of Bright Yellow Lake until you're happy. 03.
