Aug 13, 2017 · WHENCE THE NAME “MOTHER CAREY’S CHICKENS”? The names “Mother Carey’s Chickens” and “Stormy Petrel” are applied by sailors to the bird known to ornithologists as the Thalasidroma pelagica.
Mother Carey is a supernatural figure personifying the cruel and threatening sea in the imagination of 18th- and 19th-century English-speaking sailors.
