   I read the books actively: highlighted, answered the questions after every chapter, and really tried to understand every concept. Remember that reading the books or even anotating isn't going to somehow make you retain everything, you just have to understand it during that first pass.

   In order to prevent burnout, I would recommend rotating between books. Daily, I would recommend reading through 2-3 chapters (some are longer, others are shorter). Gen Chem --> Bio --> Organic Chem --> Physics --> Biochem. You pick the order you would like.
