On the same test setup, the same 15-second 1280x720p video took about 9 seconds to extract out 244 frames (first hit) and 6 seconds when the video was cached (subsequent hits). That’s a 2x-3x improvement for the same number of frames.

  5. The h.264 profile level is likely causing the issue. The lower level profiles used with HD+ footage seems to cause a buffer/playback issue. You can check your current profile level with ffprobe -show_streams input.mp4. Look for the profile level. If it's less than 5, that's probably the issue.
