“Remembrance (Cold in the earth)” is a poem written in 1845 by the English poet and novelist Emily Brontë. An elegy , “Remembrance” explores death, grief, and loss, as the speaker mourns her first and only love, who died 15 years earlier.
The use of the hypermetrical stresses in the odd lines of each quatrain creates a feeling of withering, a dying fall that echoes the brooding, sorrowful tone of the poem. The rhyme scheme for each stanza is abab. In short, ‘Remembrance’ is a well-crafted elegy which shows just how precocious Emily Brontë was.

The memories serve as a guiding force for her, and give her a sort of inspiration. The mood of the poem changes dramatically from mourning to optimistic acceptance of the sorrow. The poem is set at first in the cold, where there is snow piling over the lover’s grave. The focus of the speaker is the lover’s tomb.
