In the first of these books, a mishap at Unseen University creates “Roundworld,” a bizarro universe laden with strange, spherical planets governed not by magic but by the laws of physics.
- PRATCHETT WITHDREW GOING POSTAL FROM HUGO AWARD CONSIDERATION. Discworld books have received plenty of accolades: The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents took home the Carnegie Medal in 2001; Night Watch won a Prometheus Award two years later; and Pyramids earned the 1989 British Science Fiction Award for best novel.
Essentially, what you need to know is that the Discworld series is split into various subseries: The Wizards, Witches, City Watch, Death, and Industrial Revolution, along with a few other books that don’t really fit in anywhere.
- The Rincewind Books. The books always start with this perpetually unlucky wizard. Rincewind, who hates adventure but always gets drawn into it, appears in the following books
- The Death Books. Death, remarkably enough, stole the show more than a few times. The Grim Reaper has to visit everyone because, as he testily puts it, “There is no justice.
- The Witches and Lancre Books. Granny Weatherwax owns the Disc, except for the one time she doesn’t. She doesn’t like to talk about that time, because witches never admit defeat.
- The City Watch Books. Terry Pratchett didn’t expect Sam Vimes to rise to the occasion. He planned for Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human foundling raised by dwarves, to enter the city, rescue the citizens from the dragon, and take over the story.
Jul 25, 2013 · The point is impossible to overlook, as it may be the most official transition point in the series. The Last Hero is a beautiful, massive-scale love letter to the madcap-fantasy era before, and almost certainly a passing-on of the Discworld flame from the magical world of the past (Rincewind and the Silver Horde) to the more political steampunk ...
The Discworld is a fantasy land in the Tolkien and Brothers Grimm mould, complete with witches, wizards, dragons, trolls, and dwarfs; however, over time it has largely evolved into its own distinct culture, as its denizens find more sophisticated ways to outgrow their narrative conventions.
