Indianapolis High School (renamed Shortridge High School in 1896) opened in 1864 as the state of Indiana's first free public high school. Its original location (1864-1867) was in the former Ward 1 Elementary School at Vermont and New Jersey Streets.

A graded system was adopted in August 1853, and on September 1, 1853, Indianapolis High School (later renamed Shortridge HIgh School) opened in the old county seminary building in University Park. During the Indianapolis Public Schools’ first term in 1853, classes were held in seven rudimentary district schoolhouses and lasted eight weeks.
