Nov 21, 2009 · The earliest church in Stornoway to which we have a definite reference is St Lennan’s, built about 1630 by the Earl of Seaforth. It stood on what is now North Beach, along with a churchyard which has revealed over the years various artefacts of human bones as archaeological evidence.
Donald John Martin, a native of Arisaig who was brought up in Skye, was 29 years old at the time of his induction, and led the congregation for the next 20 years, in a very fruitful ministry in which he founded its traditions, and in due course gave the congregation its name.

The architect was R A Bryden who used the Gothic style. In 1900 it became Martin Memorial United Free Church and in 1929 Martin Memorial Church.
