The Kentucky Derby (/ ˈ d ɜːr b i /) is an American Grade I stakes race run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race is run by three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 miles (10 furlongs; 2,012 metres).
In 1896, the Kentucky Derby was shortened to 1 1/4 miles, as the 1 1/2-mile distance was believed to be too long for three-year-olds to run that early in the spring. Today, the 1 1/4-mile race is usually the longest distance that the Derby entries have run up to that point in their careers.
