The history of rail transport in Tarnów dates back to the year 1856, when the Galician Railway of Archduke Charles Louis reached the city. The architectural complex of Tarnów Main Station, fashioned after the Lviv railway station was completed in 1906 in the Austrian Partition of Poland.
A fortified town was founded on the site by the wealthy Tarnowski family in 1330. Completely destroyed by fire in the 15th century, it was rebuilt and became a cultural centre in the 16th century. It passed to Austria in 1772 and returned to Poland after World War II, in which all its industrial plants were destroyed.

In 1870, Tarnow had 21,779 inhabitants and was the third largest city in Galicia, after Lvov and Krakow. When WWI broke out in August 1914, Tarnovians willingly joined the Polish Legions and at the end of October 1918, Tarnow was the first city in Poland to gain its independence.
HISTORY. Tarnow’s origins date from 1330, for it was in that year that a local village called Tarnowiec acquired the status of a town. Just when and how Tarnowiec came into existence is shrouded in mystery. The medieval layout of the city – an oval centre with a large square in its middle – is still visible when you look at the map of Tarnow.
On the Main Square the impressive architecture, the medieval city plan, the oldest tenement house dating back to the XVI century, the City Hall and the Museum of the History of Tarnów and Region . Moving on to the West, we can see the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and Karzimierz Square.
