    • It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Family values: 'It's a Wonderful Life' (AP) Admittedly, for about 120 of this film’s 130 minutes, it’s really not a wonderful life at all.
    • Home Alone (1990) After revelling for a while in every child’s ill-thought-out fantasy – “I made my family disappear,” says Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin when his family accidentally leave on holiday without him – Home Alone then promptly changes tack, inserting two grimy burglars into the mix.
    • Elf (2003) Elf featuring Will Ferrell is considered one of the best Christmas movies. (New Line Media) This fish-out-of-water tale, in which one of Santa’s elves (Will Ferrell) discovers that he’s actually a human and sets out to New York to find his father, could have been supremely annoying if it weren’t for Ferrell’s absolute commitment to his ludicrous role.
    • The Snowman (1982) Though this beautiful, wordless animation is not widely known outside the UK – it was first broadcast on the then fledgling Channel 4 in 1982 and then annually ever since – it is well worth 26 minutes of anyone’s time.

    • The Nightmare Before Christmas. The story of Jack Skellington opening up a portal between Halloween Town and Christmas Town is executed in glorious stop-motion with fantastic, dark and spindly animation.
    • It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s not easy turning a film about attempted suicide into a festive family favourite – but Frank Capra and his leading man James Stewart did exactly that with It’s A Wonderful Life.
    • Home Alone. One of the greatest Christmas movies of all time? Why not? Home Alone is now over 30 years old, but for many of us Christmas doesn’t feel like Christmas until we’ve spent 90 minutes watching Macaulay Culkin terrorising a pair of hapless burglars.
    • The Holiday. Romantic comedy specialist Nancy Meyers takes on the Christmas season in this glossy, schmaltzy transatlantic yarn that raises a few laughs while not being quite as vom-inducing as Love Actually.

    • It's a Wonderful Life (1946) I know; big shocker that this is No. 1, right? Well, sometimes movies are considered masterpieces for a reason, and this is one of those times.
    • A Christmas Story (1983) Okay, I know a lot of you who've gotten this far are going to be upset that this isn't No. 1. I love it, too, especially when Ralphie's (Peter Billingsley) pal gets triple-dog-dared into touching his tongue to a frozen metal flagpole.
    • A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) Some holiday movies just make you feel good when they come on. They wrap you in a comforter of warm, cozy nostalgia. To me, and I'm guessing a lot of you, this is that movie.
    • Elf (2003) The best Christmas flick of the century. Granted, the century hasn't been that long, but still. Will Ferrell is priceless as the oversized elf who ventures far away from the North Pole to search for his father.
