The Farrell Centre occupies most of the Claremont Buildings, which were constructed between 1894 and 1896, when they opened as a department store. They were designed by the architect William Hope, from Tynemouth, and it was his first big commission – there was a bit of nepotism involved, as it was from his farther-in-law, Fairless Harrison!
