Studies have shown that teachers tend to use far more closed questions than open ones, even though open-ended questions lead to more challenge because they require higher-order thinking.

As teachers, we know it’s important to ensure our students aren’t just coasting in lessons. To succeed in life beyond exams, they need to be able to think deeply and critically and to be open to challenge. They need to be stretched in their learning and challenged to think at a higher level.
