   Why do we need a woodland map?

   • These maps will help to indicate whether there is likely to be potential to establish new woodland on land parcels or where there may be sensitivities that would prevent tree planting or woodland creation. Where the maps show there is a low sensitivity to woodland creation, this does not guarantee that we will approve planting.

   How do I get a map of my woodland site?

   • The map request form webpage is available via the map browser. You can download the map request form from the Forestry Commission to develop a map of your woodland site. If you cannot access the Land Information Search, or you encounter any problems while using this system, contact the support team at gr.support.england@forestrycommission.gov.uk.

   What is a digital woodland map?

   • The maps distinguish between various forest types for example conifers, broadleaves or mixed. The digital woodland map is updated annually using more recent aerial photography, interpretation of satellite imagery and administrative records of newly planted areas covered by government grant schemes.

   What is a 'census of woodlands'?

   • The Forestry Commission has carried out National Forest Inventory type surveys, usually called ‘Census of Woodlands’, since it was set up in 1919. Each one has differed slightly in what was recorded in order to answer what were seen as the key questions pertinent to the times.

   How are forests and woodlands surveyed?

   • A sample of forests and woodlands are ground surveyed with the surveys taking place over a 5-year period. The survey teams visit a representative sample of approximately 10,000 one hectare (100 m x 100 m) plots across Britain. These sites have been randomly selected so that the information needed for the survey can be gathered efficiently.
