Tildes, or written accents, are used for many different purposes in Spanish. Among other things, they are used to mark word stress, differentiate the present tense from the past tense, and show whether something is a question, exclamation, or statement.

Or, if they are capitalized: Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú. In this lesson, we will learn the rules to decide, after hearing a word, whether we should write it with an accent mark.
Spanish accent marks, or tildes, are small marks like ´, ¨, and ~ that are written above certain letters. False friend alert! While tilde in Spanish refers to any accent mark, tilde in English refers specifically to the ~ that we find on the ñ in Spanish.
