What does a UK Badger look like?
There are no noticeable colouring differences between male (boar) and female (sow) badgers. Badger cubs are born with very light silvery hairs and after a few days the facial stripes appear; they then develop to have the same markings as adults.
A male European badger is a boar, a female is a sow, and a young badger is a cub. However, in North America the young are usually called kits, while the terms male and female are generally used for adults.
Cubs can be born starting from mid-December, but it is more common for them to be born between January and March. Gestation is six to eight weeks; however, the female badger can have 11 months between mating and birth, probably due to delayed implantation (see below for more information).
The European badger is a powerfully built, black, white, brown, and grey animal with a small head, a stocky body, small black eyes, and a short tail. Its weight varies, being 7–13 kg (15–29 lb) (15–29 lb) in spring, but building up to 15–17 kg (33–37 lb) in autumn before the winter sleep period.
They live in social groups of 4 – 12 adults and when not active they lie up in an extensive system of underground tunnels and nesting chambers known as a sett. The female is called the sow, the male is called the boar. Badgers are now protected by a number of laws.
