Information on how to organise a cremation, including how to apply for a cremation, declare your wishes regarding ashes, request medical certificates and declare fitted implants.
This cremation guidance has been revised to reflect the temporary changes to the Cremation (England and Wales) Regulations 2008 provided by Cremation (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2022 which came into force on 25 March 2022.
The forms remain unchanged, however, the cremation certificate (form Cremation 5) has now been permanently removed.
The amended Regulations and revised guidance will be in force from 25 March 2022.
This guide covers the most important things you need to do when organising a cremation, including how to:
•make an application for the cremation
•declare what you wish to happen to the ashes
- What happens at the crematorium on the day of the funeral? The coffin is brought in followed by the mourners. The coffin is placed on the catafalque (a raised and decorated platform).
- Do I have to have a religious service? No. You can have a religious, non religious or no service at all if you choose, if you are non religious, but wish to have a service conducted you may wish to use the service of a Celebrant - who can conduct non-religious, semi religious, spiritual ceremonies.
- How long does the cremation service last? The whole process take between 40 minutes and an hour. Different crematorium have different durations, you should make sure you have allowed enough time for people to enter the chapel, hold the service and leave.
- What happens to the coffin after the committal? It is withdrawn into a committal room where the nameplate of the coffin is checked with the cremation order to ensure correct identity.
